ŠKUC-LL, Slovenia

ŠKUC-LL was established in 1987 within the framework of the feminist group Lilit as the first lesbian activist group in the former socialist Eastern European states. In 1988 it became an autonomous section within the association ŠKUC, the Student’s Cultural Centre, a leading organisation for the promotion of artistic activity in Slovenia.

With its culturally and politically engaged projects, ŠKUC-LL attacked the growth of lesbophobia and homophobia in politics and culture.

ŠKUC-LL was the founder of many cultural and social projects. It launched the lesbian magazines Lesbozine in 1987, and its successors Pandora and Lesbo Magazine. The organisation set up a lesbian videotheque and organised the first lesbian film week in Ljubljana in 1989, which grew into the annual Days of Lesbian and Gay Film. In the beginning of the 1990s ŠKUC-LL, together with other urban subcultures and art scenes, squatted ex-Yugoslav army barracks to start Bar Monokel. It set up ŠKUC Vizibilija, a lesbian publishing house, started a monthly radio show, called Lezbomanija in 1998, and established the Lesbian Library & Archive in 2001. In 2012 ŠKUC-LL celebrated her 25th anniversary and made a video about her history.

ŠKUC-LL went on to attract money from the Slovenian government and the European Union.

ŠKUC-LL received grants from Mama Cash in 1989 and 1996.
